poisonwood's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- pilot hero This pilot sounds like a great guy. What an amazing story. 12:19 p.m. - Jan. 16, 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- stroke This article explains the condition my sister has - unexplained stroke and a heart defect - "a tiny congenital opening between the upper chambers of their hearts." She was presented with two options - having the device described in the article implanted or open heart surgery. The former was described as less reliable and having a major downside that if there were a problem with the device, complicated open heart surgery might be required. The other option was described as having a 1% chance of mortality but solving her problems forever if she came through it. She elected to do neither and takes blood thinners. So far, no more strokes, though she's had issues with bleeding internally thanks to the blood thinners. The specific device that was recommended to her is no longer available due to problems with it. My grandmother, who passed away last week, did so because of a series of small strokes. They weren't the direct cause of death, but she decided life wasn't worth living if she didn't have her full mind, and she died due to complications of not eating and diabetes. My point, I guess, is that a stroke is very scary thing and being at risk to have one is not good. As long as she has no stroke, she made the right decision. I just hope they figure things out. 8:33 a.m. - Jan. 14, 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
