poisonwood's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AIDS Fascinating! And exciting.
11:40 a.m. - Nov. 07, 2008 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- churches The following does not surprise me: While nonwhite Christians voted overwhelmingly for Obama, most white Christians backed John McCain, according to exit polls. Several black clergy said that criticism of Obama by some white Christians over his religious beliefs and support for abortion rights crossed the line, hurting longtime efforts to reconcile their communities. ... According to Associated Press exit polls, 34 percent of white Protestants voted for Obama, while 65 percent went with McCain. Obama won the overall Roman Catholic vote, but white Catholics backed McCain by a slim majority, 52 percent to 47 percent. Among white Christians, the racial gap was most pronounced with evangelicals: 74 percent backed McCain, 24 percent backed Obama. So how did Black evangelicals vote? Is there a large group that can be defined this way? My church, or the one I attend occasionally anyway, is fairly diverse. It's mostly white and Hispanic, but has significant Asian and Black minorities. As non-university-affiliated churches go, it's not bad. I've yet to hear the priest say anything more sexist than I can bear, and it's not filled with old people, a common characteristic of Cath*olic churches. Still, I usually choose to sleep in on Sunday mornings. 8:40 a.m. - Nov. 07, 2008 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
